Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag mentioned that he is highly impressed with the Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma and wondered if he could be in contention for T20 World Cup. Jitesh made his IPL debut this season after being one of the consistent domestic performers for Vidarbha and he immediately had an impact in the middle order. He brought out his finishing skills and has managed to keep his place on the side ahead of Shahrukh Khan who was the designated finisher.

The right-hander wasn’t much rattled by the world-class bowlers in IPL  and he was happy to play his shots in a 360-degree mode straightaway. So far in nine games, Jitesh has scored 162 despite coming at number five or six where he hardly had deliveries to settle in but made the most of his opportunities. In the previous game against Rajasthan Royals, Jitesh provided the finishing touch with an 18-ball 38 that included four fours and two sixes.

Jitesh Sharma played in remarkable fashion against Rajasthan Royals: Virender Sehwag

Sehwag has always been a fan of aggressive batting, and no wonder, that he questioned if Jitesh can make it to the flight to Australia for the T20 World Cup. He reasoned that Jitesh’s performances have certainly made him one of the contenders in the race against Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Wriddhiman Saha. He noted that Jitesh has impressed him a lot and is quite excited about seeing him in the Indian colours which won’t be an easy move for the selectors.

“He has impressed quite a bit so should we send him to Australia for the T20 World Cup? I am just asking because whoever scores runs, we keep them in the category of potential players for the World Cup. But no doubt, he played in remarkable fashion against Rajasthan Royals. Ishan Kishan is a wicketkeeper-batter, Rishabh Pant is a wicketkeeper-batter, and Wriddhiman Saha is a wicketkeeper-batter but among all of them if there is someone who has impressed me the most is Jitesh Sharma,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
