Watch: Help for Heroes charity match highlights: The Help for Heroes XI who needed 159 runs to win this charity match against the Rest of the World XI were seen thorough by India’s limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni walked in after the Help for Heroes Captain Andrew Strauss got out on 26, and made sure his team surpassed the total asked from them.
For the Rest of World XI, opener Mathew Hayden scored 34, before falling to Graeme Swann, while Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene made 48. Contribution from other batsmen took the Rest of the World XI to 158/6 in 20 overs. The pick of the bowler for Help for Heroes was Mjr Storm Green who got 3 crucial wickets of Brian Lara (15), Brendon McCullum (10) and Jake Wray (3).
In reply the Help for Heroes XI team had an amazing start with former England skipper Andrew Strauss and Indian opener Virender Sehwag taking guard and playing their natural shots. In no time the target looked well within reach for the home team. On the 2nd ball of the 6th over when Strauss finally got out they already had 64 runs on the board and needed less than 100 to win.
Sehwag at the other end flourished with some typical Viru style boundaries; he hit 4 in all, but perished on 30 to New Zealander Daniel Vettori. Though there was a mini collapse with a couple of quick wickets, the hopes of the Help for Heroes XI fans were alive till Dhoni was there at the crease.
One of the best finishers MSD timed his innings perfectly and scored 38 off 22 balls with 4 fours and a six, with a strike rate of 172.73. Support from David Malan who came in for Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi made sure Dhoni took the team home with 4 wickets and 3 balls in hand, stroking the winning runs with a four.
MS Dhoni for his unbeaten and match winning knock was awarded the Man of the Match award.
