Afghanistan, on Monday (February 28), thrashed Bangladesh by seven wickets in third and last ODI of the series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. It was indeed a comprehensive win as the Bangla Tigers hardly looked in the hunt. Chasing a paltry target of 193, Afghanistan didn’t face much trouble as they crossed the line in just 40.1 overs.
Opener and wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz stole the show as he slammed an unbeaten century to take his side over the line. Meanwhile, this game was a mere dead rubber as Bangladesh had already clinched the series by winning the first two games. Nonetheless, Afghanistan would be quiet pleased after avoiding a whitewash.
Speaking of how the third ODI panned out, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat. While Liton Das played a brilliant knock, he hardly received any support from the other end. Rashid Khan, on comeback, took three wickets while Mohammad Nabi dismissed two batters. As Liton scored 86, Bangladesh managed to post 192.
Proud of the way we played: Hashmatullah Shahidi
Opening the batting, Gurbaz went after the bowlers from the outset and played some delightful shots all over the park. Besides his 106-run knock, Rahmat Shah scored 47 as the visitors clinched the game pretty comfortably. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was pleased with his team’s performance and he expressed the same after the match.
“I am proud of the way the team came to the ground today with their heads up. Proud of the way they played. The wicket was looking a bit grassy and I was happy when Tamim batted first. We have a lot of youngsters I believe in. The way Nabi and Rashid changed the match today was fantastic,” said Shahidi after the game.
On the other hand, Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal was disappointed with his side repeating errors continuously. “Very disappointed today, We were in a similar position against SL as well, where we couldn’t win the last game. We played well in the middle, but lost rhythm towards the end,” he asserted. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are now atop the ICC World Cup Super League points table. Afghanistan, on the other hand, are at the fourth place.
