Herschelle Gibbs, the explosive right-handed opener played some extraordinary innings in his life for the proteas. From his thumping innings of 175 against the Aussies to his six sixes in an over in the world cup, Gibbs has never been short of entertainment.
Herschelle was a laid back cricketer of the highest quality. His partying nature off the field was often on the show while batting. Recently this blazing opening batsman was busy revealing the night before his famous Johannesburg innings against the Australians.
Gibbs revealed that he was hungover when he played the innings of 175 that helped South Africa chase down a record score of 434 in 2006. Wanderers has always been wonderful for the South Africans and that day was one of the best days in their cricketing history. Herschelle Gibbs though was almost left out of the squad for his actions on the night before the game.
The 43-year-old wrote about the incident in his autobiography ‘To the Point: The No-holds-barred Autobiography’. Herschelle has always been among the controversies throughout his extravagant career. He has never held back anything and is known for his fearless nature. Gibbs was busy partying the night before the series decider in 2006 and which left the coach Micky Arthur and Gramme Smith absolutely furious.
Michael Hussey had seen Gibbs sit in the same spot for more than three hours. He revealed, “Just before I went to bed an hour later I looked over the railing outside my hotel room and there he (Gibbs) was, still in that spot. At least he was a free wicket.”
If it wasn’t for his innings Gibbs was in big trouble. The former protea scored a 175 in just 111 balls hitting an outrageous 21 fours and 7 huge sixes. He missed out on a double ton then but his team won the series in magnificent fashion.
While many wouldn’t have talked about this incident, Gibbs decided to give it away. This probably explains the type of player and the person the former South African cricketer is.
