Today is a sad day for Indian cricket. Former Indian cricketer and a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team, Yashpal Sharma passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 66 years old.

In an international career that lasted almost a decade, Yashpal Sharma represented India in 37 Test matches and 42 ODI games. While he scored 1606 runs in the longest format of the game, Sharma scored 883 runs in ODI cricket. He scored 2 international hundreds in his career.

Yashpal Sharma scored a vital 61 for India in the semi-final of the 1983 World Cup and played an integral role in the Kapil Dev-led Indian side beating England with 6 wickets to spare in the semifinal. Sharma played his last international match for India in January 1985, against the England side. He scored 6 runs in his final innings in international cricket for his country.

And, several big names from the world of cricket have reacted to the demise of Yashpal Sharma. The great Sachin Tendulkar tweeted that he has had fond memories of seeing Yashpal Sharma bat and his contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered. Sharma’s teammate Kris Srikkanth tweeted that Yashpal helped India in lifting the 1983 World Cup.

While Virender Sehwag stated that Yashpal Sharma was one of the heroes of India’s 1983 World Cup win, Yuvraj Singh was saddened by the untimely demise of the former Indian cricketer. Venkatesh Prasad tweeted that he was heartbroken upon hearing about the demise of Yashpal Sharma. Irfan Pathan tweeted that Yashpal Sharma served Indian cricket as a selector as well.

Shikhar Dhawan was shocked to hear the passing away of Sharma, while the likes of Parthiv Patel and Anil Kumble offered their heartfelt condolences to Yashpal Sharma’s family. And finally, Laxmi Ratan Shukla tweeted that the cricketing world will miss the presence of Yashpal Sharma.
