India’s wait to win the elusive World Cup continued after their Women’s team went down to Australia in the final of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. The jam-packed crowd at the MCG witnessed a vintage Australian side take the field who didn’t give even a chance to the Indian team to make a comeback and won their fifth title in the format. Meanwhile, social media was filled with supportive messages for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side and Virat Kohli also did his bit to sympathise with the team.

While the future certainly looks bright for this young Women’s team, it was an opportunity missed to create history at the MCG in front of 86,174 spectators. Unfortunately, the pressure got to them yet again much like it did in the 2017 50-over World Cup final at Lord’s. While it was Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney with the bat which dented their confidence first, Megan Schutt and Jess Jonassen led the bowling attack to bundle India out for just 99 runs.

The grim faces in the Indian camp weren’t the greatest scenes to witness on the day but Australia clearly played better cricket and proved everyone why they are the force in the Women’s cricket over the years.

Virat Kohli is proud of the Women’s team

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, the captain of the Indian Men’s team, has tried to chin-up the sad faces and feels that the Women’s team will come back stronger than ever from this loss. He also went on to say that the nation is proud of the efforts they put in during the tournament.

“Proud of all the efforts put in by the Indian Women’s Cricket Team throughout their #T20WorldCup campaign. I’m confident that you girls will bounce back stronger than ever. @BCCIWomen,” Kohli’s tweet read.

Here’s his tweet:

As far as India Women’s team is concerned, they were unbeaten until the final of the World Cup. They had also defeated Australia in the tournament opener in Sydney thanks to Poonam Yadav’s sensational spell. But the leggie picked only a solitary wicket in the final even as none of the Indian bowlers looked effective when it mattered in the big final. Having said that, they played some excellent cricket throughout the final and should be proud of their efforts.
