India women’s cricket team coach WV Raman has not lost his spirit despite the Women in Blue’s heart-breaking loss in the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia earlier this month to the hosts that gave the Kangaroos their fifth title in seven editions. The former India opener feels, to the contrary, that the young team is capable of dominating the cricketing world in the long run.

The Indian women remained undefeated throughout the tournament and even beat a powerful Australia in their first game. But it was in the all-important final that they failed to deliver and lost the match by 85 runs. In 2017, the Indian women also lost the final of the 50-over World Cup to England by only nine runs.

WV Raman wants to follow Australia’s model

“I’m trying to create a team which will play together for 6-8 years and dominate world cricket. That’s what sets the Australian team apart. As a team, they have played quite a few finals together and that’s the reason why they dominated the World Cup,” Raman, 54, told the Times of India.

“Their performance has given everyone a lot of confidence and has shown Indian cricket can be a dominant force in the women’s category as well. They are a young side and their performance was important to inspire girls, especially those who are on the threshold of deciding whether to take up women’s cricket as a profession,” he added.

Youngsters like Shafali Verma and Poonam Yadav earned praise for their show at the T20 World Cup and when the former was left in tears after their loss in the final, Raman was among many who consoled her saying it was a bad day in office and nothing to be ashamed of.

“I just told them there was nothing to be ashamed of,” Raman said. “Instead, they have every reason to hold their heads high because they gave a good account of themselves against tremendous odds. Things can go wrong on a given day even for the best of sides. It was just a wrong day for us and that’s all there was to it.”

The Indian players, however, had a shocking return to home as they received a dry welcome at Mumbai airport on return from Down Under.
