Former Pakistan cricketer Nasir Jamshed, on Friday, was sentenced to jail for a period of 17 months for his role in the spot-fixing scandal in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He had admitted to the offence in December last year during the trial along with British nationals Yousef Anwar and Mohammed Ijaz. Soon after Jamshed was sentenced by Manchester Crown Court, his wife Samara Afzal expressed her pain on Twitter while also urging the other cricketers to not to take the shortcut to achieve success.

Jamshed was found guilty of encouraging Sharjeel Khan to play two customised dot-ball-plan in the second over of Islamabad’s innings during the PSL 2018. The latter was then banned for five years by the PCB even as Khalid Latif too faced the same consequence who was planning a future fix with Jamshed. Moreover, during the investigation, the police also got to know that the accused had planned to fix a match in the BPL but it was later called off.

‘No one goes through the pain like us’ – Samara Afzal

Nasir Jamshed’s wife Samara Afzal who is a Doctor by profession was left heartbroken after her husband was sent to jail for 17 months by Manchester Crown Court. However, she admitted that the left-hander made a mistake and felt that the other cricketers learn from this and shouldn’t take any shortcuts to success. Samara also wrote that Jamshed could’ve played County cricket but threw a great opportunity and realises his mistake.

“Nasir could have had a bright future had he worked hard and been committed to the sport than gave him so much, but he took a short cut and lost everything, his career, status, respect and freedom. He would have got UK nationality and played county cricket, and he threw his chance away.

“He would do anything to turn the clock back and not lose everything, especially his daughter who he is very close to, but it’s too late for him. I hope all cricketers look at his example as a deterrent against corruption,” she wrote in the tweet.

Samara Afzal also hoped that no one goes through the pain and humiliation that the family has gone through over the last three years due to Nasir Jamshed’s actions. “Today is the most difficult day of my life as Nasir starts his custodial sentence & I figure out what to tell my 4-year-old.. I’ve felt the need to write this in the hope that others learn from Nasir’s mistakes & no one goes through the pain we have suffered in the last 3 years,” she tweeted.
