“Yes, I was watching the auction and KKR went for me right from the start. There were some other big franchises as well coming along and I remember the battle was going on. We, all of our (India) team members were sitting together and watching the Auction on TV. My heart was pumping, and I wasn’t able to control my emotions. I was trying to act relaxed, but you know, andar hi andar se, I was feeling a little nervous,” the official website of KKR quoted Iyer as saying.
“Eventually KKR got me, that feeling was amazing. I’m really proud, considering the rich history and to be coming into the KKR setup,” he added.
The former champions have named Shreyas Iyer their next skipper taking his overall IPL captaincy career into consideration. After taking up leadership duties from Gautam Gambhir midway in the 2018 season, the Mumbai cricketer led the franchise to the playoffs in the following season thereby, ending their long wait since 2012. In 2020, the Delhi Capitals under Iyer made their maiden final appearance going down to the Mumbai Indians.
He was all set to lead DC in 2021 as well but, a shoulder injury forced him to miss the first leg and when he came back in the second leg, the management was in no position for chopping and changing at the last moment and they also made it clear that Pant was their first-choice captain for IPL 2022. Shreyas Iyer had an outstanding T20I series against Sri Lanka where he amassed 204 runs in three matches scoring a half-century in each game to be adjudged the Player of the Series.
