The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to postpone the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a number of players and support staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Days after the league was suspended, India’s decorated spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has made a startling revelation.

Chahal revealed that before the tournament was suspended, he was already planning to take a break from the T20 Championship as the condition in his home weren’t ideal. The 30-year-old revealed that while he was playing the IPL, both his parents tested positive with Covid-19.

While his mother was quarantined at home with mild symptoms, Chahal’s father’s health deteriorated, and he was admitted to a hospital in Gurgaon. The leg-spinner asserted that it was difficult for him to focus on the game as he was worried about his parents and was always thinking about them.

“I was planning to take a break from the IPL when I heard the news of my parents getting infected. It was difficult to focus on the game while your parents were alone at home. They tested positive on May 3, and a couple of days later, the tournament got postponed,” said Chahal as quoted by India Today.

Chahal plied his trade for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the T20 competition and was having a below-average outing. In seven matches, the leg-spinner could pick only four wickets at an economy rate of 8.26 and an average of 48.50. Further in the interaction, the Haryana leggie revealed that his father is in a better condition now. Though he is still positive, he is recovering from the virus at home.

“My father’s oxygen level dropped to 85-86, and we had to shift him to the hospital. He had returned home yesterday, but his results are still positive. However, the good thing is that his oxygen level is around 95-96, which is quite a sigh of relief for us. It will take him another 7-10 days to recover,” he said.

India is the No 1 contenders to win the T20 World Cup later this year: Yuzvendra Chahal

With the IPL 2021 suspended, the entire focus is now on the 2021 T20 World Cup. India is scheduled to host the T20 World Cup later in the year in October and November. However, it is speculated that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is planning to shift the tournament to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in view of the upsurge in the number of Covid-19 positive cases in India.

Speaking about the T20 World Cup, Chahal reckoned that India is one of the top contenders to win the T20 title. “I firmly believe that we are the No 1 contenders to win the T20 World Cup later this year, even if it will move to UAE. The conditions are quite similar to India, and it will be a big boost for us,” said Chahal.
