International Cricket Council has come out with a proposal to introduce some new tournaments for the cycle between 2023 and 2031. However, there is a strong argument going on between the apex council of the game and its members. All, the members have been asked to share their views to their bid for global events in the 2023-2031 cycle
ICC proposed an idea of a T20 Champions Cup and ODI Champions Cup for the cycle between 2023 and 2031. The T20 event is expected to see the top 10 cricket nations fighting for a prestigious trophy with a total of 48 games to be played throughout the tournament. On the other hand, the 50-over event will be similar to the dissolved Champions Trophy in which top-six nations will be involved in a battle that will have 16 games.
ICC proposal and argument with the big three
Meanwhile, according to the reports in ESPNcricinfo, there is a stiff battle going on between ICC and the big three i-e– India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA) and England Cricket Board (ECB) as they are more interested in organizing bilateral series that proves to be vital in order to raise funds for the respective boards.
Earlier, Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings had said that it is their duty to make ICC strong and all the other countries that are its members. But, with that, they have to balance out their own requirement of bilateral series as well. He also added that their board majorly relies on bilateral series instead of ICC tournaments. So, they will have to balance it out.
The apex council came out with such proposal back in October 2019 that includes at least one ICC event every year like T20 Champions Cup to be played in 2024 and 2028, ODI Champions Cup in 2025 and 2029 alongside World Cups in 2026, 2027, 2030 and 2031. And, all the member countries are asked to share their interest to bid for such new events that are on the board of ICC.
Also, BCCI is looking to extend the length of the Indian Premier League and the new incoming tournament The Hundred will crush down the calendar with very little time available for such events.
