ICC U19 World Cup 2020, Day 12 Round Up – Statistical Highlights

The unbeaten West Indies Under-19s crash out of the Super League stage in the Quarter-Finals where they suffered a close 2-wicket defeat against New Zealand Under-19s. The West Indies were well placed at 183/3 in the 36th over but fell apart and were bowled out for only 238. Kirk McKenzie smashed 11 fours and 3 sixes on his way to a near run-a-ball 99. McKenzie suffered cramps and had to retired hurt in the 43rd over but returned after his side lost the 9th wicket.

McKenzie was cleaned up at 99 on the first ball he faced after resuming his innings by Kristian Clarke who bagged four wickets. The Kiwis were reduced to 153/8 by 35th over as West Indies bowlers kept striking at regular intervals. When the semi-final stood 86 runs away, The No.9 batsman Joe Field (38* off 58) and No.10 batsman Kristian Clarke (46* off 42) put on a sensible stand. The duo slowly brought down the required rate and eventually chased it down with two balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from the Quarter-Final between New Zealand and West Indies:

3 – Kristian Clarke is only the 3rd player with the double of 40+ runs and 4+ wickets during a U19 CWC knockout match. Moises Henriques (79* and 4/22) against Sri Lanka in the 2006 Quarters and Wayne Parnell (57 and 6/8) against Bangladesh also in the Quarter-Final of 2008 are the other players with this feat.

46* – Kristian Clarke’s unbeaten 46 is now the highest individual score in the U19 CWC while batting at No.10 or a lower position. The previous highest was 44 by New Zealand’s Te Ahu Davis against Zimbabwe in the 2004 edition while batting at No.11 position. The previous highest in the competition history at No.10 is recorded by Justin Dill with 34* in 2014 for South Africa also coming against West Indies.

86* – The unbeaten 86-run stand between Kristian Clarke and Joe Field is the 2nd highest partnership for 9th or lower wicket in Youth ODI cricket. The highest is 136 between Nicholas Pooran and Jerome Jones of West Indies for the 9th wicket against Australia in the 2014 U19 CWC. These 86 are also the most any team has added to win a Youth ODI game after the fall of 8th wicket.

99 – Kirk McKenzie became only the 2nd player in the history of U19 CWC to be dismissed on 99. Three players remained unbeaten on 99 while India’s Amit Pagnis was the other batsman to be dismissed on 99. Pagnis fell one short during the 1998 edition match against England which was also played in Benoni.

Overall, six players have been dismissed at the score of 99 and five players remained unbeaten on the same score in Youth ODI history till date.

239 – New Zealand’s 239-run chase on Wednesday is the 2nd highest during a knockout match in the U19 CWC. The highest is recorded by England when they chased down 242 against India in the 2014 edition quarter-final. New Zealand’s 238-run chase also against West Indies in the 2012 edition was the then highest chase in a knockout and also the 2nd highest prior to this edition.
