The defending champions India Under-19s made a winning start to the 2020 edition of the World Cup with a big win against Sri Lankan team. All the six batsmen who batted in the Indian innings contributed towards the side’s total of 297/4. Sri Lanka had a few moments during the chase but couldn’t really threaten to beat India as they folded for only 207 in 45.2 overs.

In another game, Pakistan rolled over Scotland for just 75 as Mohammad Wasim claimed a 5-wicket haul. Pakistan were 4/2 in the chase but eventually got to the target in 11.4 overs by losing three wickets.

All the statistical highlights recorded by India and Pakistan in their respective first matches:

5 – Number of players in the India Under-19s line-up scored 40+ runs against Sri Lanka; the joint-most 40+ scores in a Youth ODI inning. Australia against Ireland in the 2004 U19 CWC and India against Namibia in the 2016 U19 CWC also had four players crossing the 40-run mark.

The 2nd wicket stand of 46 runs was the lowest among the five partnerships for India in the match. Had four more runs were added for the 2nd wicket, India could have been the first team to record five 50+ partnerships in a Youth ODI inning.

5/12 – Mohammad Wasim recorded the 3rd best bowling figures for Pakistan in the U19 CWC history with his 5/12 against Scotland. The best is 6/16 by Shaheen Shah Afridi in 2018 against Ireland while Adil Rada had figures of 6/29 against Malaysia in 2008.

8 – India U19s now have defeated the Sri Lankan team on 8 instances in the U19 CWC; the most number of wins for any team against an opponent in the history of U19 CWC surpassing Australia’s 7 wins against West Indies.

India lost to Sri Lanka only once in the U19 CWCs – in the 1988 edition by 50 runs. India’s 8-match winning streak against the Lankans in U19 CWCs began during the 2000 edition hosted by Sri Lanka only.

22Yashasvi Jaiswal completed 1000 runs in Youth ODI cricket in only 22 innings which makes him the 3rd fastest to the milestone. Shubman Gill needed just 13 innings for 1000 Youth ODI runs while Unmukt Chand had reached the milestone in only 17 innings.

150 – Pakistan’s win over Scotland was their 150th in the history of Youth ODI cricket. They are only the 2nd team after India (197) to win as many as 150 Youth ODIs. Pakistan has featured in 242 Youth ODIs till date and lost 84 of them. The win against Scotland was also the 10th consecutive Youth ODI win for Pakistan on South African soil.

297/4 – The total of 297/4 by India on Sunday was the 2nd highest total in the U19 CWC by any team against Sri Lanka. The highest total against the Lankans is 316/5 which was also recorded by India in the 2004 edition.

297/4 – India’s total of 297/4 is the highest team total in U19 CWC where the highest individual score in the innings was less than 60. The highest for India in this game was recorded by Yashasvi Jaiswal with 59. The previous highest U19 CWC total with a no player reaching 60 runs was 282/7 by England against West Indies in 2016. England’s highest individual score in that innings was 59 by Callum Taylor.

1143 – Runs aggregated by Pakistan skipper Rohail Nazir in Youth ODI cricket; all as a designated wicketkeeper. His 1143 runs are now the most runs in Youth ODI history while playing as a keeper. Rohail went past Quinton de Kock’s tally of 1124 by scoring 27 runs in this game.
