ICC U19 World Cup 2020, Day 4 Round Up – Statistical Highlights

West Indies Under-19s more or less confirmed their place in the quarter-finals as they thumped England by a big margin to register their 2nd straight win in the ongoing World Cup. Last match’s hero Nyeem Young scored a 41-ball 66 batting with Kevlon Anderson (86*) to share a 101-run partnership for the 6th wicket in only 12.4 overs. The duo helped the Caribbean team to finish on 267/7 before Young stood-out with the ball as well. England were moving steadily in the chase as they were 120/2 after 29 overs before this spell.

The English team collapsed from 120/2 to 151/8 with Young claiming five wickets across four overs. England stood 184/9 after 43.4 overs before the rain brought an end to the game. West Indies were declared winners as the par score at that time was 255. In another match, Australia ran through Nigeria for just 61 as the leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha bagged an economical 5-fer. The Aussie openers chased down the target without losing a wicket in only 7.4 overs.

All the statistical highlights from West Indies and Australia’s victories in Group B matches on Monday:

1 – Nyeem Young became the first West Indies player to achieve the double of 50+ runs and 5-wicket haul in the same Youth ODI match. Young scored 66 and took 5/45 against England on Monday. During the 2016 U19 CWC, Gidron Pope scored 76 and recorded figures of 4/24 against the Fiji team – The previous best all-round show in a Youth ODI for West Indies.

3 – Australia’s Tanveer Sangha now has taken 4+ wickets in each of his last three Youth ODIs – 4/31 vs NZ in 2019, 4/30 vs WI and 5/14 vs Nigeria in U19 CWC 2020. He is only the 3rd player in Youth ODI history to take three consecutive 4-fers. Bangladesh’s Abul Hasan had four in a row in 2009 while Sachith Patirana of Sri Lanka got 4-fers in three consecutive Youth ODIs in 2007.

4 – Nyeem Young is only the 4th player in U19 CWC history with a fifty and 5-fer in the same match. Jeevan Mendis (57 & 7/18 vs ZIM, 2002), Wayne Parnell (57 & 6/8 vs BAN, 2008) and Afif Hossain (50 & 5/43 vs CAN, 2018) are the other three players with this double.

Overall, six players including Nyeem have scored 50+ and picked 5+ wickets in the same Youth ODI. Among the six players, Young is the only player to even take a catch and his 66 is the highest score among them.

5 – West Indies’ Matthew Forde claimed five catches against England including one off his own bowling. He thus became the first fielder in U19 World Cup history to claim five catches in a game. Overall, Forde is only the 2nd fielder with five catches in Youth ODI cricket as Australia’s Damien Mortimer also claimed five catches against Sri Lanka in 2014.

5/14 – Tanveer Sangha’s 5/14 against Nigeria is now the 2nd best Youth ODI figures for an Australian spinner behind Lloyd Pope’s 8/35 against England in the previous U19 CWC. Sangha’s figures are the 3rd best in U19 CWC for Australia as Jason Ralston’s 7/15 against PNG in 2018 is between Pope and Sangha’s efforts.

254 – Australia completed the chase of 62 runs against Nigeria U19s in only 7.4 overs. Their victory with 254 balls to spare is now the 2nd biggest win in terms of balls to spare in U19 CWC history. The biggest such win in the tournament history is also held by Australia who chased down the target of 23 in 3.5 overs against Scotland in the 2004 edition.
