Anil Chaudhary, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) umpire, has weaved magic with his umpiring skills on the field of play. However, this time around, he came out in support of the people at his village Muzaffarnagar District of Uttar Pradesh. The veteran managed to resolve the problem of communication even as the country is going through the coronavirus pandemic.

Chaudhary’s Dangrol village didn’t have any mobile network and the umpire decided to take it into his stride. He walked around half a kilometre into the paddy fields, climbed a tree and then got the network.

Anil Chaudhary delighted

Thereafter, a telecom company got in touch with him and set up a mobile tower in his village. After the achievement, Chaudhary was happy about how the people in his village won’t have much problems in their day-to-day life.

“I never imagined this initiative would be so beneficial for our village. There is a professor from Jalandhar who is now able to take classes. Students are happy because now they do not have to sit in the fields, fight mosquitoes, and attend online classes,” Chaudhary was quoted as saying in The Indian Express.

Chaudhary was set to officiate in India’s home ODI series against South Africa back in March. But the series had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic after an abandoned match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. On March 15, he left for his village on March 15, planning to stay for a week. But then due to the lockdown, he was stranded there.

After Chaudhary’s heroics, Ramkumar, who runs a small bank transaction unit, lauded the ICC umpire for his efforts. Ramkumar used to have a tough time, struggling for money, but is now delighted after the start of a new tower.

“Earlier, it used to take three-four days to transfer money, now it takes just few hours. I would like to thank umpire Chaudhary for his initiative. He is a hero to us. Amidst the pandemic, this is a small issue but it has helped us a long way.

“Our panchayat member Manish Chauhan and local MLA Tejinder Narwal spoke to Jio network who got the job done and we all thank them for making life a lot easier for all of us here,” Ramkumar said.
