England have comfortably defeated Bangladesh for the first time in the World Cup since 2007. It was a brilliant day at the office for the hosts as they first posted a mammoth 386 on the board and then were professional with the ball never letting the opposition come back into the game. Though Shakib Al Hasan scored a fighting century and won the hearts, Bangladesh never looked like chasing down the target. It seemed like they were playing for the net run-rate and eventually fell short by a long margin.

After being put in to bat first surprisingly on what looked like a flat pitch barring a tinge of grass in the middle of the 22 yards. Like other teams, even Bangladesh opened with spin against Jason Roy and Jason Bairstow. The ploy failed badly as the duo played cautiously to get there eyes in initially. Once the ever so less moisture in the pitch died, the batsmen, especially, Roy starting churning out quick runs.

He batted beautifully to set the ball rolling for his team even as Bairstow played second fiddle to him. They added 128 runs in less than 20 overs for the opening wicket before the latter fell to Mashrafe Mortaza. Joe Root then couldn’t do much damage as he could only muster 21 runs. However, at the other end, Roy continued in fine touch to slam a fantastic century and went on to score 153 runs off just 121 balls.

Jos Buttler was promoted up the order ahead of the skipper Eoin Morgan to up the ante and even he scored a half-century to eventually get out on 64 off just 43 balls. England lost quite a few wickets in the death overs but that didn’t stop them from ending with a huge total of 386 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Shakib stars in a losing cause

The chase was always going to be a daunting one for Bangladesh and it proved to be so. Soumya Sarkar was castled by Jofra Archer early and soon the struggling Tamim Iqbal followed suit. At 63/2, things could’ve gone wrong horribly for the Tigers. But Shakib Al Hasan stood firm for them in the middle and was well supported by Mushfiqur Rahim. The duo added 106 runs for the third wicket but it took them 17 overs to do so.

The match was well out of their hands by then with the required run-rate touching almost 10. Rahim got out to Liam Plunkett on 44 and Mohammad Mithun bagged a second-ball duck. But Shakib fought bravely playing some scintillating strokes and in the process, also brought up his first ODI century in two years. His last ton had come at the same venue itself and the southpaw must’ve enjoyed his stay in the middle.

He was eventually dismissed for a valiant 121 by Ben Stokes and Bangladesh were 219/5 at this stage. The lower order tried playing out 50 overs but lost wickets at regular intervals to get all-out on 280 runs losing the match by 106 runs. Though it is fair enough margin to dent their net run-rate, things could’ve been worst if Shakib hadn’t played a blinder of a knock for his team.
