Australia have defeated Pakistan by a considerable margin of 41 runs in match 17 of the ongoing World Cup. It was expected to rain in Taunton but the clouds stayed away surprisingly to allow a whole match for the first time in the last three days. The Men in Yellow came back stunningly after a loss to India and are now equal on points with New Zealand with three wins from four matches.

After being put in to bat first, Australia began superbly with Aaron Finch and David Warner adding 146 runs for the first wicket in 22.1 overs. The Aussie skipper took the charge after a sighter to slam 82 runs off just 84 balls even as Warner got into his elements from the other end. He took control of the control of the proceedings after Finch’s dismissal to add 43 runs for the second wicket.

In the process, the southpaw also scored his first century after returning to the national side post the ban. Until this point, Pakistan were lacklustre in the field and also dropped catches. Australia were 189/2 in the 29th over when Steve Smith got out and this where Pakistan sensed an opening. Glenn Maxwell’s promotion didn’t work and soon Warner fell for 107 which led to a collapse.

Mohammad Amir came back for his final spell and scalped some important wickets. He was the main reason why the Men in Green managed to make a comeback in the game. The left-arm seamer returned with the magical figures of 5/30 off his 10 overs as Australia were bundled out for 307 runs in 49 overs. They collapsed from being 223/2 in 34th over to lose 8 wickets for 84 runs in around 15 overs.

Pakistan infamously collapse from a strong position

The momentum was with Pakistan going into the break but the 308-run chase was never going to be easy for them. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins steamed in with the new ball and the latter struck in the second over itself to pick Fakhar Zaman. Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq then built a decent partnership by weathering the first spell of both the bowlers.

The duo added 54 runs for the second wicket stand but the fluent Babar Azam got out playing his shots for 30 off 28 deliveries. Mohammad Hafeez came out and played a cameo. His partnership with Imam kept Pakistan ahead in the game. They stitched 80 runs together before lightning struck and Pakistan’s unpredictability came to the fore. Imam and Hafeez both threw their wickets away while Asif Ali and Shoaib Malik didn’t bother the scorers much.

From 136/2, they were left reeling at 160/6 in the 30th over. Many thought Australia will register a big win but the tailenders, along with Sarfaraz Ahmed, fought tooth and nail to keep Australia on their toes. Hasan Ali smashed 32 off just 15 balls while Wahab Riaz played a vital hand of 45 runs. However, Australia were too good with the ball and it was only a matter of time before they were bowled out in the 46th over for 266 runs, 41 runs short of the target.
