After a one-sided affair in the World Cup opener yesterday, the second day was also a witness to a rather drab affair between Pakistan and Windies at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The Caribbean pace attack turned out to be too hot to handle for the hapless Pakistan batsmen. In the end, the Jason Holder-captained Windies comfortably won by seven wickets with a staggering 218 balls to spare.

Pakistan falls like a pack of cards

Both teams wanted to field first after winning the toss due to the overcast conditions and moisture on the strip. The Windies got the privilege and they made full utilization of the conditions to bowl their opponent out for 105 in 21.4 overs. Imam-ul-Haq didn’t have much clue about proceedings and he perished for two to Sheldon Cottrell. Fakhar Zaman looked good with 22 and he was castled by Andre Russell.

Haris Sohail became Russell’s second victim. Then Oshane Thomas joined the party and picked up the prized wicket of Babar Azam, who could only manage 22 off 33. After their premier batsman’s dismissal, Pakistan had a torrid time as they kept sliding down the barrel. At no point did they look like arresting their slump. Jason Holder picked up the fifth wicket in the form of skipper Sarfaraz, using the DRS.

The bounce undid yet another batsman when Mohammad Hafeez mistimed a hook into the hands of Cottrell at fine leg off Thomas. Imad Wasim also perished to the short-ball. Wahab Riaz churned out a few lusty blows to score 18 off 11 and took the Men in Green over the 100-run mark. For the Windies, Thomas was the most successful with four wickets. Holder, Russell, and Cottrell were excellent as well.

Gayle-force does the job

The run-chase was never going to be a tough ask for the rampaging Windies batting. The in-form Shai Hope and the bludgeoning Chris Gayle came out to open. Even as the former got out after scoring 11 off 17, Gayle decided to go hammer and tongs. The 39-year old Jamaican has been in awe-inspiring form over the past few months and he showed his class, even today, scoring 50 off a mere 33 deliveries.

Mohammad Amir picked up the big fish, but by then the target was down to only 29. Gayle smacked six boundaries and three sixes in his knock. Amir bowled decently as he also accounted for the wickets of Hope and Darren Bravo. Nicholas Pooran also took this chance to get some handy runs under his belt. The southpaw threw his bat around and remained not out on 34 off 19 balls with four fours and two sixes.
