Bangladesh have pulled off a heist against the Windies. Shakib Al Hasan notched up yet another century, this time, in a winning cause. Chasing the total of 322 runs, the Tigers literally ripped apart the Caribbean bowlers who kept on delivering short balls and had to chase the leather from the word go. Liton Das should also get credit for taking the pressure off from the veteran and played a delightful knock.

After putting the Windies into bat first, Mohammad Saifuddin nipped out Chris Gayle for a 13-ball duck to shock them. However, Evin Lewis found some form on the day as he and Shai Hope stitched a crucial stand of 116 runs before the former was dismissed on 70. Lewis looked dangerous but got greedy after hitting Shakib and got out to the same bowler. Nicholas Pooran came out and looked confident in his shot making. But he couldn’t get past the 25-run mark.

Shimron Hetmyer turned the tables around with a 25-ball half-century even as Hope kept on rotating the strike playing percentage cricket. Hetmyer’s knock changed the momentum of the innings but the left-hander got out soon after registering the joint-fastest fifty. Jason Holder too churned out a quickfire 33 off 15 balls before getting out to a nothing delivery.

Hope deserved a ton but fell short of it agonisingly by four runs and the Windies never got the finishing kick. They probably aimed too much at one stage and lost wickets in clusters to finish on 321 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 50 overs.

Shakib and Liton light up Taunton

The pressure was on Bangladesh in a steep chase as no team had managed to gun down such a big total in this World Cup so far. Their openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar successfully managed to counter the short ball barrage from the opposition. They added 52 runs in quick time before the latter threw his wicket away for the umpteenth time in his career.

Tamim fought his way back into the form to stitch a solid stand with Shakib Al Hasan who is literally going through a purple patch. The duo stitched 69 runs together and kept the team ahead in the chase. Just when the things looked to be sailing smoothly for Bangladesh, Sheldon Cottrell infused life into the match by affecting a stunning run-out to send back Tamim.

Soon Mushifqur Rahim was strangled down the leg-side and at 133/3, one feared if the Tigers will collapse. But Liton Das’ inclusion ahead of Mohammad Mithun worked wonders for them. The talented batsman played second fiddle to Shakib early on and got settled. The southpaw, meanwhile, crossed the 100-run mark for the second time in this tournament and timed almost everything on the day.

Soon, Liton also opened up and smashed Shannon Gabriel for three consecutive sixes. This is where the Windies were out of the contest and the shoulders of the Men in Maroon dropped. Liton and Shakib completed the formalities in the 42nd over itself as the unbeaten partnership of 189 runs to break several records on the day. While the former remained not out on 94, Shakib scored 124 off just 99 balls and his unbeaten knock was laced with 16 fours.

With this loss, things have got tougher for the Windies while Bangladesh just needs to carry the momentum into the upcoming games to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
