The story has been the same for Bangladesh over the years. They have been winning hearts enough at the ICC events and that’s what they did in the game against Australia. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a scintillating century in a steep chase while Mahmudullah also fought well with him scoring a valiant 69. But Australia was too good for them and had done enough with the bat posting a mammoth total of 381 runs and Bangladesh were chasing the leather all the time.

David Warner and Aaron Finch once again provided Australia with a perfect start after opting to bat first on a flat Trent Bridge. While the Aussie skipper continued scoring runs, his partner was in his elements from the word go on the day. Finch scored 53 runs before Soumya Sarkar before the 121-run partnership was broken while David Warner kept playing his shots and went on to score a massive 166 runs.

He was exceptional and played some brilliant strokes during his stay in the middle. Usman Khawaja batted at three today and finally showed some form in the tournament. He looked fluent after a long time and deserved to get to the three-figure mark. But Sarkar’s bouncer was too good for him and fell 11 runs short of his ton. Glenn Maxwell had fun during his 10-ball stay in the middle scoring 32 runs.

Australia pressed on the accelerator from the 38th over massively and churned out so many runs with Bangladesh bowlers looking hapless. Eventually, the defending champions finished strongly on 381 runs for the loss of five wickets after 50 overs.

Rahim’s yet another ton in vain

Bangladesh were conservative at the start and only tried to up the ante in the last 10 overs. Maybe they should’ve tried going after the Australian bowling, which is not incisive, a little early in the chase. The fact that the Tigers finished on 333 runs chasing a mammoth total proves that they’ve got all the talent in the world to score big. But their bowling has been letting them down time and again.

Shakib Al Hasan looked good yet again but this time he could score only 41 runs while Tamim Iqbal finally got going and scored a brisk 62 before Mitchell Starc castled him. The real impetus to the innings was provided by Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah as they stitched 127 runs together in quick time. But Bangladesh had left too much to do in the last 15 overs.

They fell 48 runs short of the target in the end. Probably, they should’ve bowled a little bit better and they had a real chance to scare Australia in the chase. Unfortunately, once again they ended up winning the hearts which is not enough to make it to the semis. On the other hand, Australia climbed to the top of the points table.
