ICC World Cup 2019: Match 31, BAN v AFG – Bangladesh Player Ratings

On a difficult batting track, Bangladesh was put into bat first by the opposition. It was Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan who, yet again, steered the team through in the innings with their heroic knocks. But before that, Bangladesh tried something different by opening the innings with Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal. However, the former could only accrue 16 runs while his partner got 36.

Both Shakib and Mushfiqur got to their half-centuries and set the platform. Mosaddek Hossain built up on that and finished the innings for his team with a brief cameo. Bangladesh got to 262/7 in their quota of 50 overs. While Mujeeb Ur Rahman picked up three wickets, Gulbadin Naib accounted for two.

The chase didn’t really pan out as per plans for Afghanistan. Most of their batsmen got off to starts but none could play the match-defining knock. With an unbeaten 49, Samiullah Shenwari was the highest run scorer while Gulbadin Naib mustered 47. However, there weren’t any other significant contributions and the team was bundled out for 200 in 47 overs.

Liton Das – 2.5/10

Liton Das had a wonderful opportunity at his disposal as Bangladesh gave him the opportunity to open the innings. He looked good initially, laced a couple of boundaries. However, he couldn’t control the shot he played to Mujeeb’s carrom ball. Hashmatullah Shahidi took a nice, low catch to send the batsman back to the hut. Das also ran out Ikram Ali Khil on the field.

Tamim Iqbal – 4.5/10

Tamim Iqbal took some time initially and looked to build his innings slowly. He was setting himself up for a good knock and was batting on 36. But on the 53rd ball that he faced, Mohammad Nabi bowled a great delivery, hitting the top of off, which is an off-spinner’s delight. The Afghan veteran was successful in his attempt as the ball went crashing into the stumps bringing an end to a watchful innings from Tamim.

Shakib Al Hasan – 10/10

Shakib Al Hasan continued with his good form in the tournament and registered yet another half-century. The all-rounder didn’t take too many chances and emphasised on strike rotation. Out of the 51 runs that he scored in this match, only one four was hit. However, he couldn’t take it further as a great delivery from Mujeeb Ur Rahman outfoxed him. That wasn’t it for the No.1 ODI all-rounder. It seemed extremely tough to score off his bowling. He picked up five important wickets and conceded just 29 in his 10 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim – 9.5/10

At one stage of their innings, Bangladesh was possibly looking at around a score of 225 or thereabouts. But Mushfiqur Rahim made a massive difference with a brilliant knock. The wicket-keeper batsman played some glorious shots before he got out in the penultimate over for 83 runs.

Soumya Sarkar – 1/10

The experiment of sending Soumya Sarkar down the order didn’t really work for Bangladesh. He consumed 10 deliveries and could only score three runs before Mujeeb Ur Rahman trapped him LBW.

Mahmudullah – 4/10

Mahmudullah made a valuable contribution down the order with the bat. He scored 27 runs off 38 balls and hit a couple of boundaries as well. However, the 33-year-old couldn’t score at a good pace and got out at an important juncture of the game in the 43rd over.

Mosaddek Hossain – 7/10

Mosaddek Hossain was good with the bat scoring a quickfire 35 off 24 deliveries. He hit four boundaries and was good with the ball also. In the 6 overs that he bowled, Mosaddek just gave away 25 runs and picked up the important wicket of Hasmatullah Shahidi.

Mohammad Saifuddin – 3/10

It wasn’t really the kind of day Mohammad Saifuddin would have hoped for. While he bowled tight lines and lengths, he couldn’t get amongst the wickets early on. He opened his tally towards the end of the innings by dismissing Mujeeb. Saifuddin conceded 33 runs in 8 overs.

Mehidy Hasan – 1.5/10

Mehidy Hasan was amongst the most expensive Bangladesh bowlers on the day. In the 8 overs that he bowled, he conceded 37 runs at an economy rate of 4.6 and couldn’t pick up any wickets.

Mashrafe Mortaza – 1/10

Mashrafe Mortaza’s troubles in the tournament continued as he had yet another poor outing. The Bangladesh skipper decided to open the bowling for his team but couldn’t make much of a difference. In 7 overs, he gave away 37 runs to the opposition and went wicketless yet again.

Mustafizur Rahman – 4/10

Mustafizur Rahman bowled well in this match. One out of the eight overs that he bowled was a maiden. He conceded 32 runs at 4 runs per over and cleaned up the tail of the Afghan batting line-up. His two wickets in the game were those of Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran.
