Nathan Lyon is a regular in the Australia’s squad in the longest format but he is yet to be a familiar face in the limited-overs side. Spin specialist  Lyon revealed that his childhood dream was to represent the national side in a World Cup, adding he is looking forward to giving his best to rise among the ranks.

With the Steven Smith-led side currently in India for the bilateral series with visitors already trailing by 1-0 in the five-match ODI series, the leg-spinner Adam Zampa and left-arm orthodox spinner Ashton Agar were preferred over senior campaigner Lyon.

“I’d love to play in a World Cup one day,” Lyon was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia.

Owing to his instant preference for the participation of New South Wales side, Lyon further added that he would fight hard to cement the place in limited-overs cricket. In order to fetch the long-term position in the 50-over format, Lyon is aiming to swing the fortunes in his favour with his performances after an average first stint.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it, but I’m not looking to change anything (from bowling in Test cricket) too special. I need to get picked in the Australian team first before any of that, and I need to perform well for NSW,” Lyon added.

Lyon has competition

Moreover, Australian ODI squad in the subcontinent has part-time spinners Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell who have shown some promise with the white-ball and adding to the cause of spin. However, the 29-year-old offie reiterated he is focusing on the JLT One-day Cup, which will be beginning from Wednesday (September 27) between Cricket Australia XI and South Africa in Brisbane. The eight-team competition will run through between September 27 and to October 21, 2017. In the recently concluded two-match Test series against Bangladesh, Lyon tasted success, becoming the Man of the Series for his 22 wickets in the matches played in Dhaka and Chittagong.
