"If we field so poorly, no amount of runs will be enough"- Virat Kohli after defeat against West Indies

The second Twenty20 International between India and the West Indies once again exposed a plethora of chinks in the Men in Blue’s armour when it comes to the shortest format of the game. But apart from their obvious fallacies, one thing that has stood out in the ongoing series thus far is the home sides’ shoddy fielding as well as catching. On a flat track and a wet ball, bowlers need support every inch of support from the fielders.

And, you can’t expect to win games when you are regularly making errors in the field and dropping simple catches. And, the same happened with the hosts in Thiruvananthapuram as the West Indies batsmen made Virat Kohli and his boys pay for their fallacies on the field.

First, it was Washington Sundar, who dropped a simple catch of Lendl Simmons off Bhuvneshwar Kumar at long-off. And, then it was the turn of Rishabh Pant, who after having caught Evon Lewis, proceeded to shell the catch as his gloves hit the ground.

The West Indian openers- and especially Lendl Simmons- made the most of their chances and helped the visitors’ coast home to an eight-wicket win. Naturally, Virat Kohli, who took a blinder of a catch to dismiss Lendl Simmons, wasn’t pleased with his team’s fielding. Kohli termed it as “below-par” and reckoned that no amount of runs will be enough if they continue field in the same manner.

“If we field so poorly, no amount of runs will be enough. We were poor in the field during the last two games. We dropped two catches (Sundar and Pant) in one over. Imagine if they lost two in the same over that could have increased pressure. Everyone saw we need to be more brave in fielding. It’s a do-or-die game coming up in Mumbai,” Kohli said as quoted by Times Now.

Apart from their shoddy fielding, India’s inability to accelerate at the backend of the innings also came into the scanner in the second T20I. India could manage just 30 runs in the last four overs, something which Kohli touched up in the post-match conference.

Numbers say a lot of things. They can say a lot of things that aren’t there as well. I think we were good for the first 16 overs while batting when we were 140 for 4. But then in the last four overs, we should have got 40 to 45 runs and we got only thirty. We need to focus on that,” said Kohli.
