India posted a fighting 252 in their first innings despite losing half their side early on Day one of the second Test match against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer top-scored for the hosts with 92 runs off 98 deliveries and missed out on a well-deserved century after being stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off Praveen Jayawickrama.
In reply, Sri Lanka too got off to a disastrous start as they lost three quick wickets including the big one of skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. However, the way the visiting captain was dismissed by senior pacer Mohammed Shami is arguably what stood out the most during the Lankan’s first innings.
Mohammed Shami castles Dimuth Karunaratne with a great delivery
Mohammed Shami was just introduced into the attack in the sixth over and he immediately struck for India on the very first delivery. The pace sensation bowled a length ball outside off stump. Nonetheless, the delivery completely ended up taking the batter by surprise as it angled back in sharply after pitching, breached Karunaratne’s defense, and went through the gates to disturb his furniture. The Sri Lankan captain walked back to the pavilion with just four runs to his name.

Dimuth Karunaratne’s dismissal left the visitors in a spot of bother as they were reduced to 14/3 in no time. Later, Shami took one more wicket in form of Dhananjaya de Silva. Apart from Shami, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has also picked up two wickets. The Indian bowlers would now be looking to work in tandem to skittle out Sri Lanka before stumps. At the same time, Shami would also be looking to leave the remaining batters puzzled with his inswingers.
Earlier, a total in excess of 200 looked far-fetched as the Rohit Sharma-led side kept losing wickets at regular intervals after winning the toss and electing to bat first before Shreyas Iyer carried out the rescue act as he played a brilliant counter-attacking knock. His innings included 10 fours and four sixes before being the last Indian batter to be dismissed.
