The Board of Cricket Control in India might pull the Indian Cricket Team out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy which is scheduled to start in June next month. This news arrived in the wake of a two-hour long Special General Meeting which made the BCCI representatives furious. Thus, the members opposed ICC’s new constitution that aims to reduce India’s share in resources.

Therefore, India has the right to pull out of the tournament and the cricket fans might suffer due to the long-standing rivalry between the ICC and BCCI. The Board threatened to quit their participation in the tournament if their demand reinstating their initial status of the “Big Three” proposal is not met.

“BCCI reserves its rights to take all necessary decisions to exercise the rights under the Members Participation Agreement (MPA)” an anonymous source of the BCCI stated,

The ‘Big Three’ states excess power to the three major cricketing nations- Australia, England and India. It also ensures a considerable amount of share in global revenues and facilitates them to have a larger role in administrative decisions.

BCCI officials accused ICC of breach of conduct even though the Board has honored all bilateral commitments on Future Tours Programme (FTP). ICC’s new constitution also targets reduction of monetary share and power. The stand of current ICC Chairman, Shashank Manohar, isn’t helping BCCI’s cause either, who affirms equal power among all boards and dissolution of ‘Big Three’.

Interestingly, BCCI found support from Sri Lankan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe board for the Big Three model, and need only one-third the members to agree with the continuation of the model.  BCCI’s CEO, Rahul Johri, Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, Joint Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and acting president CK Khanna were present in the meeting.

With the implementation of the judgment of the Lodha Committee weakening the internal power of the BCCI, the board recently has been under a turmoil. Seeing the growing power of the nation in the matters of administration of cricket, it is only fair to say that ICC is attempting a conspiracy against the BCCI to weaken its global prowess. With the long-standing face-off between the two giants of Cricket, it may not be surprising that India pulls out of the ICC Champion Trophy in England.
