Former Australia batsman Michael Hussey was all praise for the Indian team after the latter’s historic Test series victory Down Under. Team India, on Monday, ended their 71-year wait and 11-series winless streak to script history. Virat Kohli & Co. won the four-match series 2-1 after the fourth and final Test in Sydney ended in a tame draw due to wet conditions and bad light.
The scoreline of the series might suggest that it was an evenly-contested competition but the performances on the field deny so. Barring the second Test in Perth which Australia won by 146 runs, India were all over the hosts in the Border-Gavaskar series. The world number one side won the series-opener by 31 runs before stamping their authority in Melbourne when they won the game by 137 runs to take an unassailable lead.
The tourists would have won the fourth Test after piling up 622 runs and bowling out the hosts for 300 to enforce follow-on before weather quashed their hopes. While none of the Australian players could score a century in the series, India had five from their side. Cheteshwar Pujara alone scored three while Kohli and Rishabh Pant scored one each.
The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav also showed the gulf between the two sides by making light work of Australian batsmen.
India superb throughout the series
Impressed with India’s dominant performances, Hussey lavished praise on them, hailing them for their aggressive attitude under their inspirational skipper.
“I think it’s been their mentality. I’ve seen a lot of teams come to Australia shores and hope they play well. But India have come here and they were expected to play well in these conditions. Yes, Australia is in a bit of turmoil and transition with a few players out of the team.
“But they have come here with an attitude of confidence, they want to be aggressive, they wanted to take the game on and that’s under Virat Kohli’s leadership which I think has been superb throughout the series. They played in a great spirit but they have played real confident cricket,” Hussey was quoted as saying by India TV.
He further pointed out how tough it has been for the Asian teams to come and deliver in Australia, saying, “It’s not easy for a sub-continental team to come to Australia, adapt to the conditions and play so well. You can just tell how much it meant to them.”
With momentum on their side, India will now be looking to make the most of it in the upcoming three-match ODI series which will commence on January 12.
