India v England, 2nd Test, Day 3 – Statistical Highlights

India took a 200-run first innings lead after bowling out England for 255 with Ravi Ashwin registering yet another 5-wicket haul on his name. India lost 3 early wickets after deciding to bat again instead of enforcing the follow-on. Once again it was captain Kohli who took India out of troubles by scoring an unbeaten fifty batting with Rahane. India finished the 3rd day at 98/3, with a lead of 298 runs in their kitty. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

0 – Number of times including this game a visiting team avoided follow-on in India since 2011 after India posted a score of 330+ in the first innings of a Test. The last team to avoid follow-on after India total of 330+ was New Zealand in 2010 at Ahmedabad.

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian to score fifty-plus scores in both innings in his 50th Test match.

2 – Ravi Ashwin became the 2nd Indian to take 50+ wickets in consecutive calendar years in Tests. Harbhajan Singh picked 50+ wickets in 2001 and 2002.

4 – Number of times Virat Kohli has aggregated 200 runs in a Test match, easily most times by an Indian. Gavaskar and Pataudi aggregated 200+ on two different occasions as captain.

4 – Virat Kohli’s fifty in 2nd innings is only the 4th fifty plus score for him in 3rd innings of a Test. Before this innings, Kohli has an average of 24.72 in 3rd innings of a Test.

7 – Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a 5-wicket haul in Test cricket against all the 7 teams he has played against. Ashwin never played a Test against Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

9 – Number of fifty plus scores Jonny Bairstow has made in 2016 in Tests, joint most by any wicket-keeper in a calendar year. AB de Villiers also had 9 fifty plus scores as keeper in Tests in 2013.

13 – Number of times Cheteshwar Pujara got bowled in Test cricket since 2013, joint 3rd most by a player in this period. Alastair Cook got bowled 16 times while Stuart Broad and Kane Williamson got bowled on 14 occasions in this period.

14 – Runs aggregated by India’s top 3 in 2nd innings of this test, the 3rd lowest by them at home since 2000. India’s top 3 aggregated 2 runs vs New Zealand in 2010 and 5 runs vs England in 2001.

16 – Number of times Pujara got bowled in his Test career, the most by any Indian since his Test debut. Sehwag and Dravid got out bowled 12 times in Tests since Pujara’s debut.

22 – Number of 5-wicket hauls Ravi Ashwin has taken in Test cricket. Only 3 Indians have more 5-wicket hauls than Ashwin.

41 – Ravi Ashwin has 22 five-wicket hauls in the 41 tests he played so far, the 2nd most by any player at end of 41 Tests. Sydney Barnes had 24 five-fers in the 27 Tests he played in.

223 – Runs aggregated by Kohli in this Test so far, the most by an Indian captain in a Test against England. Previous highest was 216 runs by Pataudi in 1964 at Delhi.

772 – Runs made by Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes as pair in Tests in 2016, the most by any pair for 5th or lower wicket in a calendar year in Tests.

1759 – Runs aggregated by England for 6th wicket in 2016 in Test cricket, most by them in a calendar year for any wicket. These are also the most runs added for a 5th or lower wicket by a team in a calendar year.
