Australia’s bid to come from behind and beat India in the ongoing ODI series has taken a big blow as they will be missing their in-form pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile for the remainder of the series. Coulter-Nile has returned to Perth to attend the birth of his second child. The right-arm pacer missed the third ODI in Ranchi too although he was set to leave after Friday’s game. But he had to leave immediately after receiving a message from home.

Before his departure, Coulter-Nile had played in all four matches against India, two T20Is and the two ODIs. He was player of the match for his 3-26 in the thrilling final-ball win in the first T20I. With Coulter-Nile out, Australia included Jhye Richardson in the playing eleven for the Ranchi game and the move paid off as the latter picked up three wickets to help Australia beat the hosts.

Coulter-Nile will link back up with the Australian team in the UAE for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Pakistan. The series will start on March 22 and end on March 31 before the pacer flies back to India to ply his trade for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Australia keep series alive

Coulter-Nile’s absence, nonetheless, did not hurt Australia much as the visitors beat India by 32 runs in the do-or-die third ODI to register their first win of the series. Asked to bat first, Australia put on an imposing total of 313 for 5. Their openers Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja laid the foundation for the big total by sharing a mammoth 193-run stand. Kuldeep Yadav broke the stand by dismissing Finch for 93. Khawaja, however, went on to score his maiden ODI ton.

In reply, India rarely looked in contention despite their captain Virat Kohli’s 41st ODI ton. While Kohli held firm from one end, he found little support from the other. India were eventually all out for 281.
