India are seeming unstoppable in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship, having racked up 300 points, a country mile above the rest. In fact, in all their six Tests after the 2019 World Cup, no team even has come close to overhauling them. Of late, Virat Kohli and Co unfolded mayhem in the Bangladesh team, defeating them by an innings and 130 runs at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

In the opening Test, the one aspect that went against India was the toss. Barring that, the hosts hardly put a foot wrong. Kohli’s men bowled the Tigers out for 150. Only during the 68-run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque did Bangladesh look like getting an upper hand. Yet again, the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav spewed venom.

In India’s first innings, Abu Jayed Rahi removed Rohit Sharma and Virat in single-digit scores. But Mayank Agarwal didn’t allow the visiting team to get a foothold back into the contest. The Karnataka batter notched 243 off 330 with 28 fours and eight fours. It helped India rack up a lead of 343 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja racked up 54, 86 and 60 runs respectively.

Hapless Tigers do down in Indore

With a colossal trail, Bangladesh lost Shadman Islam, Imrul Kayes and Mominul inside the first 13 overs. By then, the writing was pretty much on the walls for the Tigers. Mahmudullah succumbed to another failure. Mushfiqur came to the party and scored 64 with seven fours. From the non-striker’s end, the veteran saw wickets going down. There was a bit of resistance from the lower order though.

Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored in the 30s to delay the inevitable. After their dismissal, Mushfiqur also perished, attempting a lofted shot down the ground off Ravi Ashwin. The Indian offie also got Ebadot Hossain’s wicket to seal the fate of the match. In their second innings, Bangladesh were bowled out for 213. Shami showed his class in the second innings, ending with four wickets.

Mominul Haque, the Bangladesh skipper, said

I thought it was a challenging decision (Toss). Abu Jayed and Mushy are the positives for us in this Test match. Liton also batted well. It was very challenging for the top-order batsmen, they have a great bowling attack. We will look to enjoy the next pink ball Test match.

Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, said

I don’t really know what to say. Clinical performances all around. The team is playing really well. I can’t say something which people are not seeing on TV. Fast bowlers are at the top of their game. It’s a dream bowling combination for any skipper. Even the slip fielders are ready as they know the ball can come any over. The numbers and the records are there to see. Our focus is to take the Indian cricket higher and higher.

The motivation and the intent is right and we don’t care about the numbers. I know the importance of getting big, I took a lot of time so I wanted him to score big. I don’t want the guys to make the same mistakes that I made. Pink ball test it’s gonna be exciting. The crowd over the last three days has been brilliant. It gives the players extra motivation to go out and perform.

Mayank Agarwal, the Player of the Match, said

I hope the smiles continues for longer and longer. I do practise six-hitting but not during the Tests. It’s a dream come true for me. I am very glad for the start that I got. It’s great to have somebody like Virat who can motivate you. We played three sessions under lights back in Bangalore. Rahul Dravid has arranged that for us.
