India is all set to go against England in the first Twenty20 International at Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday, July 3. While bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Washington Sundar missed out from making it to the squad because of injuries, the visitors’ power-packed batting line-up was intact for the high-voltage series against the formidable hosts,  ranked just two places below Virat Kohli’s men in ICC rankings at the moment.

We take a look at how India’s top five scorers in cricket’s shortest format have done it against England in bilateral series/matches over the years. This is a record which features more players of the current generation rather than those of the past. Five of the top six Indian scorers in the T20Is are playing in the upcoming series against England and let’s have a glance at their numbers vis-à-vis England:

1. Virat Kohli (1,992 runs in 59 matches; average 48.58; no hundred; fifties 18; strike rate 137.00)

Virat Kohli, who is just eight runs short of 2,000 runs in T20Is, has scored 236 runs in nine matches against England since 2011 when the two teams played their first bilateral T20I match. He averages 26.22, has a strike rate of 134.09 and one half-centuries against the Englishmen in bilateral T20I series with the highest score of 66.

At home,  Kohli has scored 126 runs in six matches at an average of 21 (strike rate of 121.57) with the highest score of 38 in Mumbai in 2012.

In England, Kohli has played just two T20Is so far, scoring 70 runs and that includes one half-century (66) scored in Birmingham in 2014. He averages 35 and has a strike rate of 152.17 in T20Is versus England in England.

2. Rohit Sharma (1,949 runs in 81 matches; average 31.43; hundreds 2; fifties 15; strike rate 136.58)

Rohit Sharma is one of India’s most prolific scorers in the T20I format but surprisingly, the 31-year-old dashing batsman has done almost nothing against England since he made his T20 debut against the same team in that game of Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World T20 in South Africa. Rohit Sharma has scored 89 runs against England in five games at an average of 29.66 and strikes rate of 141.26 with one fifty (55 not out) which was scored in Colombo in 2012.

In England, Rohit has played just two T20Is so far and has scored 10 runs in them at an average of five and strike rate of 90.90.

At home, he has played only one T20I game against England so far and he scored 24 runs in that at a strike rate of 126.31. The upcoming series will be key for Rohit Sharma to make some significant contributions with the bat to boost his T20 career figures against England.

3. Suresh Raina (1,578 runs in 75 matches; average 29.22; hundred 1; fifties 5; strike rate 134.87)

Yuvraj Singh will remain a special name in the history of T20s for his majestic six-ball six against Stuart Broad in the game against England in the T20 World Cup in 2007. He has played eight of his 58 international T20 matches against England, scoring 160 runs at an incredible strike rate of 186.04 (almost 50 points more than his overall strike rate) and an average of 22.85.
