After loads of twists and turns on Day five, the opening Test between India and New Zealand ended in a draw. Bad light also played a big part in the last session of the final day. The hosts needed to pick one wicket to emerge victorious at the Green Park in Kanpur. But Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel showed a great amount of resilience to make sure that the Black Caps ended the game unscathed.

Latham, Somerville start well

The Kiwis came into the final day, having lost Will Young to Ravi Ashwin at the fag end of the previous day. The visitors had a challenging day ahead of them as they needed 280 runs to win with nine wickets in hand. The onus was on Tom Latham and night-watchman William Somerville to give the Black Caps a good start and they stitched together a priceless 76-run stand for the second wicket.

Somerville scored 36 runs before a short-pitched delivery from Umesh Yadav accounted for his wicket. Ravi Ashwin delivered the body blow as he pinned Latham, who scored a well-made 146-ball 52. Kane Williamson tried to put his head down and see off India’s bowling. He was successful to some extent before Ravindra Jadeja trapped him plumb in front in the final session of the day’s play.

Rachin Ravindra shows nerves of steel

The third and final session was mostly about survival for the New Zealand batters. Scoring runs wasn’t the need of the hour for the Kiwis, staying firm in the middle was. Ross Taylor couldn’t survive for long after Jadeja accounted for his wicket in the 64th over. Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell perished without making much of an impact. It was then up to the lower order batters to survive.

Rachin Ravindra scored only 18 runs off 91 balls, but showed a lot of character with close-in fielders around him. Kyle Jamieson also played out 30 deliveries to keep India at bay for some time. From there on, Ravindra and Ajaz Patel guided New Zealand to safer shores. The duo played out as many as 52 balls. Jadeja picked up a four-wicket haul, but couldn’t take India over the finish line.
