India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day 2 Stats Review: Ravindra Jadeja shatters flurry of records to put India on command

Ravindra Jadeja scored his second Test century as he remained unbeaten on 175, his highest score in Test matches, to help India in posting a mammoth total of 574/8 as the hosts declared their innings of day two of the first Test in Mohali. R Ashwin too scored a half-century with Jadeja being involved in three 100 plus partnerships. For the visitors, Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, and Lasith Embuldeniya took two wickets each.

Jadeja scored 175 not out off 228 deliveries which included 17 fours and three sixes. He shared a partnership a 130-run partnership with Ashwin and 103 off just 94 deliveries with pacer Mohammed Shami to take India to their highest Test innings total in Mohali. During Sri Lanka’s innings, Jadeja also took the crucial scalp of their skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, who was well-settled but got out on 28 runs after facing 71 balls.

R Ashwin accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne’s wicket for the sixth time in Test matches as the latter was dismissed for 17 runs. Both Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva got out LBW to Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin respectively. Mathews made 22 as Pathum Nissanka remained unbeaten on 26 along with Charith Asalanka who is batting on one. The tourists still trail India by 466 runs and with four wickets already down, Rohit Sharma would hope for his bowlers to wrap up the Sri Lankan innings quickly on Day three.

175* – Ravindra Jadeja achieved his highest score in Tests. His previous best was 100* vs West Indies in 2018.

574/8d – India recorded their highest Test score in Mohali. Their previous highest was 516 against Pakistan in 2005.

1 – Jadeja’s score of 175* is the highest by an Indian in Tests since 2020. Rohit Sharma’s 161 against England in the year 2021 is now second on the list.

3 – Jadeja also registered the third-highest Test score in Mohali. Shikhar Dhawan’s 187 against Australia in 2013 and Gautam Gambhir’s 179 against England in 2008 are in the top two spots.

2 – Jadeja also became the second Indian player after Kapil Dev to score 5000 runs and take. 400 wickets across formats.

6 – Lahiru Thirimanne has now been dismissed six times by R Ashwin in Tests. Only England’s James Anderson has dismissed the southpaw more often (8).

1 – Jadeja became the first player batting at no. seven or below to be involved in three 100 plus partnerships in a Test inning.

6 – Six 50-plus partnerships were registered by India. Twice they have recorded the same against West Indies in 2016 and against West Indies in 2011. Their highest is eight half-century partnerships in an innings against England in the year 2007.

2 – Jadeja notched up his second Test century in 85 innings.

16 – India has now scored 500-plus runs in a Test innings 16 times against Sri Lanka. They have also recorded over 500 runs against Australia the same number of times.

1 – Jadeja also achieved the best score by an Indian at no. seven in Tests. He surpassed Kapil Dev’s score of 163 against Sri Lanka in 1986.

50.66 – Jadeja has the best average for India across formats since 2020. Shreyas Iyer is on second for his average of 42.76.

5 – Also, Ravindra Jadeja is the fifth Indian to be involved in three 100 plus partnerships in a Test inning.
