Run-outs often make for some hilarious moments in cricket, and the ongoing first T20I between India and the Windies made many laugh early on in the match. While the Indians saw the funny side of the incident, unfortunately for the Windies, it was one of their most experienced batsmen Shai Hope who had to walk back to the hut.

In the fourth over of the match, T20I debutant Khaleel Ahmed ran into bowl at Hope who was looking good on 14.  The batsman chipped the ball to mid-wicket, where KL Rahul was placed. Although the ball fell well short of the fielder, the batsman decided to go for the run. The non-striker Shimron Hetmyer initially responded. But suddenly Hope decided there wasn’t any run there. Hetmyer turned back, and for some reason, Hope also started running towards the non-striker’s end.

KL Rahul’s bizarre throw!

What followed though was utterly bizarre. India nearly didn’t get the runout, as KL Rahul, after collecting the ball, lobbed a throw way over the wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik‘s head. But you can always count on Manish Pandey to stay alert on the field, and he ran in from backward point to catch the wayward throw, ran to the stumps and broke them. There was some confusion about who was the batsman dismissed as both ended up at the same end. Eventually, the third umpire ruled that it was indeed Hope who had to go since Hetmyer had made his crease before Hope did.

Earlier in the day at the Eden Gardens, India’s deputy skipper Rohit Sharma, who has taken up captaincy duties in the absence of Virat Kohli, won the toss and elected to bowl first. KL Rahul was brought back into the team, while Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed made their T20I debuts. The older of the Pandya brothers was also donning an India shirt for the first time.

India’s strongman Umesh Yadav got the early breakthrough for his side as he removed Denesh Ramdin in the third over itself. The batsman tentatively poked at a delivery that shaped away late. The bat was away from his body, and overall it was just a poor shot. All he managed to do was edge the ball to Karthik behind the stumps.
