India and Windies are currently locking horns in the first T20I at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue’s interim captain, won the toss and had no hesitation to field first. The decision wasn’t surprising for the reason that in six T20Is at the venue, the team batting second has won four times. Moreover, India have a strong batting lineup.
The match was a nostalgic one for the Caribbean team for the reason that back in 2016 they emerged victorious in the World T20, beating England in a cliffhanger of a final. However, they didn’t get off to the best of starts and lost wickets at regular intervals. Shai Hope and Denesh Ramdin opened the batting and got off to a decent start with 16 runs off the first couple of overs.
Hope succumbs in a horrendous manner
However, fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the lineup, removed Ramdin to draw first blood for the home team. In the very next over, the Caribbean team lost their second wicket in the form of Shai Hope. The right-hander succumbed to a shambolic run-out courtesy of a mix-up with Shimron Hetmyer.
In the first ball of the fourth over from left-arm fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed, Hope went off for an improbable run. Hetmyer initially responded to the call, but then turned his back on his partner. KL Rahul almost made a mess of the dismissal, but Manish Pandey had the presence of mind and he threw down the stumps without much fuss.
In the end, Shai Hope and Hetmyer were left stranded at the bowler’s end. With Hope’s dismissal, both openers were back to the hut inside the fielding restrictions. To add insult to injury, Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Hetmyer soon after with a vicious short delivery which got big on the batsman. Meanwhile, Twitter couldn’t stop ridiculing the rather hilarious dismissal of Hope.
