Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is of the opinion that India will bounce back from the first Test defeat at Pune. After the team’s 333 runs defeat Ganguly said that India have been 1-0 down before and they come back from there to win the Test series.

“India will definitely come back in the series. In Sri Lanka, they were 0-1 down but came back to win the series. India was 1-0 up in England but lost 3-1 to lose the series. This team has shown in the past that they are capable of bouncing back in the series,” the left-hander told the reporters present at the Eden Gardens where the Vijay Hazare Trophy is underway.

The king of offside believes that India were rather surprised by the Australian spinners. He said that they bowled extremely well and bowled with hunger as well. Ganguly said that these Australian spinners will make the Indians think.

“India must have been surprised with the way Australia’s spinners bowled. It’s not the first time India prepared turners. They believed their own spinners were more accurate than the Aussie spinners. The way the two Australian spinners bowled will make India think for the rest of the series,” he was quoted saying.

He also lauded the Australian spinners, especially the man of the match Steve O’Keefe. He said that he hadn’t seen any Aussie spinner bowl this well in India since 2001. The former Indian opener said, “Both the Australian spinners kept the pressure on the Indian batsman. After a long time since 2001, I saw an Australian spinner bowling well on the turning track here. There were turning tracks during the series against South Africa, New Zealand, and England but they were all smashed by Kohli and his team.”

O’Keefe notched up a six-for in both the innings to finish with 12 wickets. Even Nathon Lyon grabbed 5 wickets in the match. Ganguly said that the spinners from down under bowled with consistency and vigor. “Indians did not expect the Australian spinners to bowl so well on that Pune wicket. It’s not because of the track but the fact is both the Australian bowlers bowled consistently well on the Pune track,” said the prince of Kolkata.

When asked about the comparison between the current and the Australian team of 2001, Ganguly was quick to state that the team back then had champions in it while this team is quite young. He said, “I don’t want to compare and it’s not fair as well. But yes that team had champions all over. This team is a young Australian team and has shown they have the hunger to do well here.”
