Rishabh Pant hit his second fifty of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 on Monday when he slammed 78 not out in 36 balls against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur to help Delhi Capitals (DC) overhaul the target of 192 with four balls to spare. Pant’s other fifty was also a stormy one (78 not out off 27 balls) and it had come against Mumbai Indians (MI) in DC’s first game this season. On both occasions, Pant was the man of the match for his destructive take. He has scored 336 runs from 11 matches so far at an average of 37 plus and strike-rate of 163.

Pant missed WC berth to Dinesh Karthik

Pant’s innings on Monday was studded with six fours and four sixes and this was his first major knock since being overlooked for the 15-man squad that India is sending to the World Cup due in England next month. Pant lost the race for a berth to the more experienced Dinesh Karthik as the second keeper of the side after Mahendra Singh Dhoni even though he was picked ahead of Karthik for India’s last ODI series at home against Australia.

There were voices that were stunned to see Pant missing out from the WC squad, especially after his meteoric rise in Test cricket since the England tour of 2018. Former India Test opener Aakash Chopra was one who was far too impressed with Pant’s show against the RR on Monday and went on to say that India will miss him in the World Cup.

In a tweet, Chopra first mentioned that the bails weren’t dislodged despite the fact that Jofra Archer was the bowler and then hailed Pant’s talent and quoted that the Indian team will miss him in the mega event.

Pant, along with Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini, has been kept as standby players for the Indian squad who will chip in if there is an injury. Rayudu too missed the bus after a strong build-up of him playing in the No.4 position at the mega event. He was replaced with Vijay Shankar, a comparative newcomer in international cricket.
