April is here and the ICC World Cup is set to kick off in May. The participating teams, including India, will be busy finalising their squads in April as the deadline for announcing the same also falls this month. MSK Prasad, the chairman of India’s selection committee, on Sunday said confidently that the team the selectors choose will win the mega title in England. The WC will be played in England for the fifth time and India will be looking for their second title on the English soil after the historic victory of Kapil’s Devils in 1983.

India to play their first game against South Africa on June 5

Prasad, a former India wicket-keeper, said the Indian squad for the showpiece event will be announced on or before April 20. India, led by Virat Kohli, will be playing their first game of the tournament against South Africa in Southampton on June 5, three weeks after the final of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) is played.

Prasad, who visited a temple at Srikalahasti town in Andhra Pradesh, his home state, spoke to journalists later and said they have worked on the team and players for one-and-half years now and tried and tested combinations. “We will be announcing our team for the World Cup on or before April 20,” Sporstar cited reports quoting the chief selector as saying.

As per the tournament’s guidelines, every team has to unveil its final squad at least a month prior to the beginning of the tournament on May 30. The teams can make changes to the squad of 15 at least seven days before the tournament begins after which the ICC’s Event Technical Committee must approve them.

Prasad said the squad for the 2019 World Cup will be announced on or before April 20. Ten teams will participate in this year’s World Cup, the 12th edition since 1975, and will play each other in the round-robin format with the top four point-earners making it to the semi-finals.
