Indian Twitter users roast Nick Compton after he questioned Rohit Sharma’s overseas performances

Opener Rohit Sharma made solid contribution with the willow in the just-concluded Test series against South Africa by belting 529 runs in just four innings in three Tests. He ended up with three centuries, one of which was a double, and by the virtue of bagging the man-of-the-match award in two matches, the Mumbai batsman was picked as the man of the series.

For the 32-year-old, the turnaround in the longer format is special. Considered almost a discard in red-ball cricket, Rohit found an opportunity to open in Tests after KL Rahul got dropped and he made full use of the opportunity. His 255-ball 212 in the third Test even reminded the supporters of Virender Sehwag, the swashbuckling former opener whose brisk scoring at the top had made India’s work that much easier.

However, while the fans and cricket experts were busy lauding Rohit’s golden run in the series, one cricketer thought otherwise. Nick Compton, grandson of the legendary Denis Compton, tried to remind all about Rohit’s performance in overseas conditions only to be slammed by the Indian supporters.

Compton, who played his last match for England in 2016 after a four-year career in international cricket, has taken digs at Indian cricket earlier as well. “What about when he plays overseas?” was the 36-year-old’s indirect jibe at the ace batsman. The remark didn’t go down well with the Indian fans.

Rohit Sharma’s averages abroad

Rohit Sharma’s Test averages overseas are still ordinary. While the latest series saw his home average shooting up to 99.8, the batsman averages 31 in Australia; six in Bangladesh; 17 in England; 15 in South Africa; 41 in New Zealand; 37 in Sri Lanka and 25 in the West Indies. Overall, his average in Tests abroad is only 26.32 with no hundreds.

In the T20Is, Rohit averages 27.77 overseas and 46.88 in neutral venues. In the ODIs, Rohit averages 38.48 abroad and 52.95 in neutral venues. It was not known, however, what Compton meant by Rohit’s performance overseas for he slammed as many as five hundreds in the ICC World Cup 2019 held in England in May-July.
