Rising Pune Supergiant saw the change in leadership this season. MS Dhoni was replaced by Steve Smith as the captain of the side. This was done keeping in mind the fact that the team needed to be revamped this season for a better show. RPS had finished at the penultimate position in the last season of the tournament. Coming into this season, their fortunes have not changed a great deal either thus far.

Over the last few games, one man who has been under the scanner is the former skipper MS Dhoni. Dhoni has been a perennial performer in the Indian cricket circuit and in the history of the IPL too. However, there have been questions hovering over his future as a member of the side. There have been many who have been quoting that it is perhaps the end of the road for Dhoni’s career.

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly had also opined that Dhoni is perhaps not the best-suited batsman for the shortest format of the game. Amidst all the brouhaha, the RPS skipper Steve Smith has managed to stay calm and still believes in his wicket-keeper batsman. As per the recent quotes in Sportswallah, Smith spoke at length about MS at the press conference on the eve of the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Pune.

Smith noted that Dhoni has been hitting the ball well in the recent times. He cited how MS had clobbered one on the roof of the Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bengaluru. He expects MS to deliver a big score sometime soon.

“He has been hitting the ball quite well in the end. He is a class player. As they say, ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’. He was playing well in Bangalore and he also hit a monstrous hit. He was looking like he was finding his groove. Hopefully, we will see a big knock from him in the coming games,” quoted Steve Smith.

One of the questions asked to Smith was whether MS should be promoted up the order. A very jovial Smith responded back with a quote saying,  “Do you want him to open the innings?”.

He further added that it will be worth seeing how things fare up in the match to come. He hopes that Dhoni will certainly come up with a better score in the further games. Also, he rightly remarked that he is not very much concerned about the form and batting of MS Dhoni.

“We will see how it goes. I am not worried about MS. I think he is going to do fine.”
