South African cricketer AB de Villiers is one of the most revered cricketer in the world cricket. He has a huge fan base across the world. His fan following is unmatched with any other overseas cricketer when it comes to the Indian fans. The Indian fans absolutely love him and the crowds in Bengaluru, in particular, go wild every time he steps on the field.

They do not miss out on the opportunity to chant his name and the chants of ‘ABD, ABD’ reverberates at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium all the time. And AB de Villiers does not disappoint either. On his day, he is an absolute beast at work. Recently, in the match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018, AB came up with a complete performance.

After scoring a quick 69 with the bat, he backed it up with a sensational catch on the boundary ropes. After the game, he made a very unusual comment that many failed to understand. When asked about the fans cheering him, AB referred to the fans as ‘my bok boks’.

The secret behind bok boks

Many people could not catch what AB de Villiers had said. In fact, even the top cricket commentary websites failed to catch what AB had remarked. Well, here is the meaning of the phrase. Bok Boks comes from the Afrikaans word, “Bokkie”, which is used referred as a term of endearment. Hence, ‘my bok boks’ mean ‘my close ones’. There is a good long history to the phrase though.

Apparently, by using the phrase the RCB batsman actually tried trolling a popular South African golfer. Apparently, the golfer recently wanted to send a voice note on WhatsApp to his girlfriend. In the voice note, he had used the word ‘bok boks’. Much to his disliking, he had ended up sending the note in a group chat and the trolls started coming his way big time. The fans mocked him and he became a butt of all jokes. And now, AB has certainly taken the troll to the global level by using the word in the IPL.
