Gautam Gambhir has recently stepped down as the skipper of the Delhi Daredevils (DD). He mentioned the decision to have been taken by himself and not influenced by any sort of pressure from the team management. The decision has been taken in light of Delhi’s horrendous run in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The franchise has played six games in the tournament and has slumped in five of them. Their only victory came against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai where Jason Roy’s blitzkrieg took Delhi over the finishing line in a last-over thriller. Apart from that, the Daredevils have looked far from clinical, which has been a major detriment in their campaign.

The humble step by Gautam Gambhir

Following Gambhir’s resignation, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the skipper for the remainder of the event. The left-hander’s form with the willow hasn’t been top notch either. He scored a superb half-century against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their opening game, however, he couldn’t breach the single-digit scores thereafter and was unable to give the starts which were desperately required by his team.

Recently, it has also been learned that Gambhir won’t be taking any salary from the Daredevils and will play the season for free. He was among the marquee players but fetched only INR 2.8 crores in the auction. His heydays in the league had been with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) whom he represented for seven years while taking them to glory as many as twice.

After the message surrounding Gambhir’s remuneration in the league sparked, he was praised for setting an example for others to follow. Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the Gold Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the Men’s ten-meter air rifle, shared a one-word praise on Twitter for the Delhi-born cricketer.
