The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) auction was lit up as the teams are looking to build their squad from the scratch. With the option of retaining a maximum of 3 players, many teams held on to the nucleus of their side. For the rest, they had the option to use the RTM cards for a maximum of 3 players based on the retention – and it was something which surely bemused Kings XI Punjab owner Preity Zinta for a while.
As expected, English all-rounder Ben Stokes was the most expensive player in the auctions. He went to the Rajasthan Royals for a whopping Rs. 12.5 cr; the highest paid player at least after day 1. The Indian batsmen KL Rahul and Manish Pandey also made it big in the auction as they were both sold for Rs. 11 cr to Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.
There were many high points during the auction as well as some funny moments with regards to the use of the RTM cards. While Shikhar Dhawan was retained by SRH, RCB managed to keep Yuzvendra Chahal. Defending champions Mumbai Indians successfully applied the RTM for Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya. KKR first retained Robin Uthappa and then to the surprise of most pulled up the card for Piyush Chawla, their last RTM was reserved for Kuldeep Yadav.
It was home calling for veterans Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. While Delhi Daredevils had Gambhir back in their ranks, Kings XI Punjab signed Yuvraj and he comes back in the lion’s den. Both are probably the last phase of their cricketing careers, so it was heartening for the fans as they returned to the place of their origin.
The auction lit social media up and there were some hilarious tweets. A day when the franchises made so many major decisions, Twitterati didn’t mind poking fun.
Preity Zinta who went after every player in the beginning did manage was a source of a lot of jokes. Royal Challengers Bangalore who were damn late in making their presence felt at the auction and continued to be the butt of all jokes. The surprise bid for Harbhajan Singh by Chennai Super Kings attracted the North South jokes.
Here we take a look at some of the hilarious Twitter reactions from day 1 of the IPL 2018 auction:
