The Kings XI Punjab had turned out to be the team to beat in the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League. However, their fortunes have taken a dwindling turn ever since. They had finished at the finalists of the 2014 edition. But the next three editions have been forgetful for them. They have ended up as the wooden spoon holders in the last couple of edition.

This certainly is not a tag to be proud of. The previous two editions have clearly shown that the Kings XI Punjab have lacked planning in their approach. Also, they needed a strong revamp in their plans for the upcoming edition of the tournament. At the IPL 2018 auctions, the KXIP think tank seem to have got their act right by picking up some key players for the key roles in the team.

All the franchises had a purse of INR 80 crore as they headed in to the auctions. The teams were allowed to pick up a maximum of 25 players. This includes a maximum of 8 overseas players.  Interestingly, only four teams could manage to bag 25 players in the auctions. The Kings XI Punjab could not make up their 25 players with the amount they had.

Big buys and the average expenditure

The Kings could only rope in a total of 21 players at the auctions. Also, this included just 7 overseas players. Now, they are left with a purse of INR 10 lakh. Indian batsman KL Rahul was the costliest buy for the Kings at the auctions. He received a whopping amount of INR 11 crore. Next in line was Indian offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin bagged a contract worth INR 7.6 crore at the auctions.

The overseas player who fetched the highest deal from the KXIP team was Australian all-rounder Andrew Tye. He, too, received a contract of INR 7.2 crore. Australian batsman Aaron Finch also managed to get a contract worth INR 6.2 crore – the same amount that KXIP used to retain the services of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis via their RTM option.

In all, Kings XI Punjab shelled out INR 79.9 crore at the auctions for their 25 players. Hence, their average expenditure on each turned out to be approximately INR 3,804,000 or INR 3.805 crore.
