Gautam Gambhir returned to his hometown franchise Delhi Daredevils after a momentous 8-year stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Unfortunately for him, his return has failed to inspire the Delhi side to change their fate in the tournament. The Daredevils reached the final four previously in 2012 and from then, they always remained in the bottom half.

An anguished Gambhir was also disappointed with the fans in social media for writing off the Delhi Daredevils. They lost three out of their first four games and won just a single game against the Mumbai Indians. A concerned Gambhir noted that things haven’t gone well thus far, but there’s always room for a comeback in IPL.

“With one win in four games, social media trial has begun for Delhi Daredevils. In the times when everything is judged on “trolls”, “hits”, “followers” or “likes”, it seems my team has committed some sort of crime. If we don’t react in a certain way it doesn’t mean we aren’t hurt,” wrote Delhi’s new skipper Gautam Gambhir in his column for Times of India.

“We are all concerned that we conceded almost 200 runs in two consecutive games. We won against Mumbai Indians but even that night I went to bed worried. Yes, we should have been more competitive against Kolkata Knight Riders,” Gambhir added.

It’s important to get the combinations right: Gambhir

The Daredevils have chopped and changed their playing XI a lot already and the loss of Kagiso Rabada prior to the commencement of the tournament was a huge loss for them. Gambhir also noted that it’s important for their side to get the combinations right to stand a chance of entering the playoffs.

“IPL is a sort of a tournament where it is crucial to get combinations right. I am not one to hide behind excuses but in a new team like ours getting right combinations can take a few games” said Gambhir. Delhi will next face the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are off to a similar start this edition.
