The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stormed to their third championship in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Yellow Army thumped the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in two consecutive matches in the Qualifier 1 and the grand finale to make their comeback stint a successful one. They equalled the Mumbai Indians (MI) as the team with most titles and captured the imagination of the fans.

MS Dhoni was appointed as the skipper of the reputed team in 2008 and he hasn’t let down his franchise by any means. Gautam Gambhir, who played for the Delhi Daredevils (DD) this season, brought forth the reasons behind CSK’s impressive shows in the tournament where he also highlighted Dhoni’s role. Moreover, the 36-year-old talked about the difference in approach of the players and the owners of the teams.

“MS Dhoni is their cricketing boss”- Gambhir

“A lot goes into the world of franchise cricket. It is an expensive business – franchise fees, salaries of players and support staff, travel, stay etc. There is one more head that no balance sheet shows: EGO. Most owners are successful outside the business of IPL. Just like cricketers, they hate to lose.

But while cricketers can sportingly accept defeat against a better team, team owners are ruthless as they measure everything against Return on Investment (ROI),” Gambhir wrote in his exclusive column for The Times of India (TOI).

“Given the circumstances, if the owners interfere in on-field matter, can you really blame them? But Chennai Super Kings are different. MS Dhoni is their de-facto cricketing boss. I have heard from Dhoni that no one from corporate side influences any cricketing calls.

You can argue that it cuts both ways that since CSK have played record seven finals there is every reason for Dhoni to be given a free hand,” he added.

MS Dhoni’s team has been a successful lot even outside the IPL. They won the Champions League T20 twice in 2010 and 2014 respectively. The franchise made a comeback in the IPL this year and displayed why they are regarded as one of the best teams in the tournament. They have also won the IPL Fair Play Award as many as six times, which has turned out to be another feather in the hat.
