The security at the cricketing venues in India has tightened up over the years following violent behaviour at grounds by the spectators. Such incidents have happened before at the Eden Gardens and recently at the Barabati Stadium when the Indian team was outplayed by a visiting team. The spectators hurl various things on the field in agony which potentially can hurt the players. To avoid such mishaps, the fans are not allowed to carry a lot of things into the Stadium one among which is coins.

At the Wankhede Stadium, there are boxes kept at the entrance gate and the fans are made to keep the coins in those locked boxes before entering. However, many people question this step as they feel that it is their money and they are being looted.

MCA donates the money

According to Mid-Day, it has been revealed that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) donates the collected money to a nearby temple. An MCA official confirmed the news and cleared that they have nothing to do with the money and they don’t even unlock the boxes.

“We don’t open the boxes containing the coins which are locked. After every game or two, we take them to the temple. We have no business in dealing with that money. It is none of our concern. So, the best way is to donate them,” he said.

Interestingly, the coins collected from one game amounted roughly to Rs 2,000. Apart from that, the objects such as power banks, headphones, bags, pens etc are also not allowed inside the stadium. A lot of venues have cloakrooms where fans can keep their items safely for a nominal fee and take it back while leaving. Also, the sale of plastic water bottles has been banned as those are mostly hurled at the players and the water is served to the spectators in the disposable PLA Cups for free.
