The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is into its crunch stages where teams are straining every muscle to secure a berth in the playoffs. While T20 is mostly deemed to be a batsman’s game, the bowlers have also had their say. The wrist spinners have been successful in the tournament and have been hard to decipher by the best in the business.

The likes of Mayank Markande, Rashid Khan and others have been exceptional with their skills. Meanwhile, the finger-spinners haven’t had much to cheer as they haven’t quite matched the wrist-spinners shoulder to shoulder. However, Harbhajan Singh, who is representing the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has affirmed that the finger-spinners would definitely stage a comeback.

“This is just a phase”- Harbhajan Singh

“I think a lot of players have gotten used to playing finger spinners which is why wrist spinners have been successful of late. But I feel this is just a phase and after batsmen start reading wrist spinners well, the time of finger spinners will come again,” Harbhajan mentioned.

One of the prime reasons why wrist spinners are the more successful is that they have variations up their sleeves. Nevertheless, Harbhajan has picked up six wickets in the eight matches he has played. The discarded Indian spinner also talked about the requisite of variations in order to survive the rigours and dynamics of the game.

“Wrist spinners have three or four different deliveries in their arsenal like the googly, flipper and leg- spin whereas finger spinners have only one or two. To be successful in this format, you have to be very skilful and have variations in order to pick up wickets. But at the same time, if you’re not picking up wickets, you need to dry up the runs,” he added.
