The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be staged in a month’s team. The retention ceremony was held in December after which the auction was conducted in January. Several franchises bid for their respective players. Kings XI Punjab went for several big names and picked up some utility cricketers like Ravichandran Ashwin, Chris Gayle, and Yuvraj Singh. Meanwhile, they also drafted in Andrew Tye, the Australian pacer, for a whopping INR 7.20 crores.
Tye- A smart buy
Karun Nair, who has also been snapped by the Punjab franchise, hailed Tye’s selection as a smart move from Punjab’s perspective. “Andrew Tye (bought for Rs 7.20 crore) is a good pick. He had done well for Gujarat Lions. You also need a trusted bowler at death to check runs and pick wickets. The addition of Chris Gayle and Yuvraj Singh adds power to it. Gayle has been a legend in the IPL. Any opposition will be wary of hitters like Gayle and Yuvraj,” Nair was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Ashwin has been selected to lead Kings XI Punjab in the eleventh edition of the tournament. He played for the Chennai Super Kings in the first eight seasons. However, after CSK’s two-year suspension, he moved to the Rising Pune Supergiants and played a couple of seasons for them. However, he wasn’t retained by CSK ahead of the next season and was bought by Punjab. Nair, in his chat with the media, praised Ashwin’s attributes as a cricketer.
“I have known Ashwin for the last two or three years, whenever I have been a part of the Indian team. He is a smart thinker and he thinks a great lot about the game. Ashwin has his own ways of doing things and he is really smart about his moves. If you see his bowling, he has all kinds of plans set up for each and every batsman. If one doesn’t work, he goes for the other.” Nair added.
