The Chennai Super Kings have played two games in the 11th edition of the IPL and have pulled a thriller in each of them. While it was Dwayne Bravo who took them over the line against Mumbai Indians, a collective effort from Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu and more importantly Sam Billings ensured a nail-biting victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Shane Watson, the new recruit in the Chennai based franchise has looked good in the last two games. He did quite well with the ball in both the games and provided a good start too against the Knight Riders.
Flying start
Chasing 203, the Super Kings needed a flying start to ensure that they maintain the required rate under control. Watson started in great fashion as he took the attack to the opposition and started firing boundaries after boundaries. His explosive innings was ended by Tom Curran who was announced as the replacement for Mitchell Starc.
Tom Curran got the wicket of Watson in the sixth over. His first two delivers were dispatched to the boundary but Curran had the last laugh as Watson was caught in the deep by Rinku Singh. Watson, 36, was clearly gutted to depart and was quick to make his feelings known to Curran, appearing to call him a ‘f*****g pie-thrower’. Curran did not take the criticism lying down and responded to Watson with some expletives of his own.
Top finish
The KKR spinners then made life difficult for the yellow brigade and the Super Kings failed to hit boundaries in the middle overs. MS Dhoni and Sam Billings got the home side back into contention but the former fell in the 17th over with more than 50 runs still required for victory. Billings then played a swashbuckling inning as he smashed two fours and five sixes before being dismissed by Curran.
The job was not done yet as CSK needed 17 off the final Vinay Kumar over. Bravo hit a six off the first delivery which was also a no-ball. Jadeja then finished off things in style by hitting a six off the penultimate delivery. The win took CSK to the top of the table and they face Kings XI Punjab on April 15 in Mohali.
