The defending champions Mumbai Indians showed signs of a resurgence last night as they secured their third victory in IPL 11 toppling Kings XI Punjab at the Holkar Stadium Indore. It was a do or die situation for Mumbai as a loss would have marked the end of their hopes of making it to the next stage, but they brought their top game out under pressure and put on an all-round show with both bat and ball to add two points to their tally and move to no. 5 in the standings.
Kings XI Punjab would be kicking themselves for the fact that they couldn’t get to 200 in the first innings despite being provided with a good start by the Gayle-Rahul duo again. Considering the dimensions of the ground and the fact that it was going to get dewy in the second innings, anything less than 200 was under par. Punjab didn’t up the ante as much as they needed to be in the middle overs which resulted in them remaining 15 or 20 runs short of what would have been a winning total under those conditions.
Mumbai, during their chase, adopted the policy of keeping wickets in hand and taking the game deep and although it got a bit too close towards the end, the fact that they had some of their strong strikers in the shed, Mumbai always had an upper hand. Krunal Pandya, the man who had to cope a lot of criticism for his clumsy knock against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, stepped up to the plate and smashed the Punjab bowlers to all corners of the park to finish with a 12-ball 31.
The skipper Rohit Sharma, at the other end, saw it through calmly with Krunal and made sure there was no twist in the tale at the last second. The Mumbai Indians fans haven’t had much to celebrate this season, but last night was their night, not only to celebrate but also to get back at the trolls on Twitter with some funny memes/gifs.
